Ranking in Google absolutely still matters, even with AI being available, but there’s a catch now—#1 Rankings Don’t Matter Anymore. AI should now be mentioning your brand. You can actually rank on Google and still be losing traffic to your site. All of this is the case because internet users are now trusting AI searches more than traditional Google results that they would’ve relied on in the past.

#1 Rankings on Google Don’t Matter Anymore

Number one rankings on Google doesn’t matter anymore. Visibility is the new goal.

This is the case because it’s worthless if your competitor dominates the AI overview above you.

What this means exactly is you are fighting to be seen over placed in a popular spot.

How it worked was where if you ranked number one in Google, then you would be the 1st thing seen, most likely.

That’s because the only thing above the 1st few links that you would see (at best) would be what was called a featured snippet.

And what this was, is that same instant answer that you were looking for.

And most cases where people would be looking just for the answer to their question and then they would go on to the next thing that they’re trying to find.

The concept is still the same in the case where the average user of the internet is not looking to scroll.

They are trying to get instant access.

And that’s where having your information placed in the AI overview provided by Google will get you the same results that you’re looking for.

Now it matters even more than if you were ranking number one.

AI Should Be Mentioning Your Brand

The new goal for your presence digitally is to develop a brand and have it mentioned by AI.

Let me clarify, it’s still important to have Google notice and recognize you, but there is another factor into this equation, which is artificial intelligence.

It’s becoming a new search engine to where it is able to go through the other search engines that would usually dominate the digital marketplace.

And with that it’s looking for more of that trust, expertise, and relevance within your brand.

This is where having reach is much more important than just influence alone.

By being someone that, that AI Overview can trust, They will refer more of your content because it’s familiar with your brand as a whole.

It understands what type of content you create—All the different things that would possibly be relevant for whatever is being searched.

It’s actually a much more efficient way of making sure that what’s being placed in front of the user is best.

So instead of the search engine, looking for your article or post specifically, it’s looking to see what do you as a whole create?

What is it that your entire domain and brand is known for creating?

And that’s where obtaining that same rapport with AI search engines ends up being critical.

Because it’s a good word of faith that gets put in each time, every time everybody ends up looking for something that could be close to what it is that your brand is a whole creates, they’re going to get referred to.

You might not even have something specifically exactly with what they’re looking for, but because your site is known for that type of content, you will be referred to every time.

This is a way that you win over followers instead of viewers. A more loyal form of support.

You Can Rank on Google And Still Lose Traffic

Understanding that you can rank on Google and still lose traffic is what SEO has come to now in 2026.

This is the case, as mentioned before, where ranking itself isn’t what’s going to determine your traffic flow anymore.

You’re now looking for visibility. Being relevant is what gets you seen. SEO still matters, but being relevant is key.

If you’re writing as close as possible for the reader, it’s going to be noticed by AI.

This is where creating for your brand is most important.

You have to be known for a certain style of content and themes when you’re creating.

It’s not just doing it to create something random and expecting it to rank.

Now it’s more consistency with the type of things that you’re looking to get ranked with.

That alone is what will be getting your content recognized by AI.

Users Trust AI searches more than traditional

Users now trust AI searches more than they do any other search engine because of how instant and relatable these searches pop up on your favorite AI provider.

ChatGPT can get the question and explain to you in a very conversational tone, to where you will continue going back to use it.

It feels as if you’re speaking directly to another person rather than doing research, which wins every time.

And because the user experience is one of the most valued parts of being on the internet, it’s shifted to where The person that creates digitally has to cater to something that AI will like and appreciate.
