Why is a thousand dollars called a grand?

A thousand dollars is called a grand for a few different reasons possibly:

  • It could be the phrase “a grand sum of money” which meant 1K
  • The English word ‘grand’ comes from the French grand and meant ‘large’ or ‘great. 
  • It comes from a $1,000 banknote with the portrait of former 18th president of the United States Ulysses Grant
