I’ll be explaining why habits may pose a challenge to saving.
Why might habits pose a challenge to saving?
I can speak from personal experience when saying the problem is lack of budgeting.
Habits play a tremendous part in the quality of someone’s life. Whether they’re good or bad they’ll parallel your life!
I’ve been practicing this principle since my elementary school years. We had to read books and I’m sure that’s how I came across this lesson.
My favorite thing to do is save an amount that makes spending the 70% of what I earned much easier.
What makes willpower ineffective?
Willpower is a concept that’s completely reliant on the amount of fuel you’re running off of.
Fuel could be anything in reality. Motivation or even physical hunger.
Mine tends to do down when I’m tired.
It’s usually at its strongest when another person can match your intensity in whatever it may be.
Does this mean that there’s absolutely no place for willpower.
Not exactly.
But applied to saving it’s just way too risky.
I point that out because moving less out of emotion and closer to logic will prove to serve you best in the long run.
Instant versus delayed gratification
I’m a huge fan of instant versus delayed gratification and sports played a big role in this belief.
I was a wrestler through a majority of my grade school years and felt this concept wasn’t mentioned nearly enough although we applied it very often. Personally I felt this was the case because I was someone that chose to cut weight and that involved restricting my diets at times. Competitions in general I believe teach delayed gratification with the option to do plenty of other things but instead choosing activities that benefit the outcome of your sport directly.
Ultimately it’s picking between a short term reward or a life long skill. In comparison the first is more commonly associated with people that need an immediate benefit because trouble’s waiting. The best example I could provide is someone that absolutely needs to win the lottery to settle a debt. That tells me they need an abnormal blessing for sustenance while the delayed is seeing the bigger picture. That’s more of someone that might want money too but they put the time to build a business daily that eventually provides the same type of reward.
What are the effects of following the crowd?
You’ll find out the effects of following a crowd quickly once you become someone that falls into the lure of pop culture.
It’s taking orders instead of giving them out. One’s not better than the other definitively but there’s definitely social pressure that comes with being a follower.
Sometimes it might be more common to see someone become one through situations like financial crashes or even during evacuation drills.
