What I think could happen to Dragon Ball after the passing of Akira Toriyama (my thoughts)

I’ll be sharing my thoughts on what I think could happen to Dragon Ball after the passing of Akira Toriyama.

What I think could happen to Dragon Ball after the passing of Akira Toriyama

After getting the unexpected news about the passing of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama it led to me thinking about the possibilities that could come about with the future of the show. So far this is where I think things could go:

  • It could end immediately
  • Sasuke Toriyama could continue it
  • Possibly a new movie with a complete final ending
  • Daima could have a new ending in where both will eventually be released

Why I think Dragon Ball could end

Dragon ball could end just to simply show respect to Akira.

It depends on how specific he was with plans for terminating the show.

The show could also be something that fans would want given a complete ending.

And lastly there’s also the possibility that there’s just not much more of a story to continue when you look at where we’re at.

What point should a successful story end?

If the plan is to end the show on a successful note which is more than possible then there’s a few basic storytelling tropes to follow to be consistent.

Here’s what I came up with:

  • The main character resolves the conflict
  • The journey is over
  • Surprise and emotional impact
  • The one that fans collectively agree should be the way it ends

The first 2 points are a given with any story.

The protagonist fixes whatever problem there is or completes whatever mission they set out to do.

There’s also been great stories in time that proved having an unexpected ending makes for a satisfying conclusion with fans.

Ultimately it should be the one that fans collectively agree is best for the show.

Meeting or succeeding expectations of a successful parent

This point needs to be addressed because suggesting Sasuke takes over the family business and continues Dragon Ball sounds picture perfect but there’s some things to consider:

  • That type of pressure can be unfair
  • A system might have to be in place
  • It could’ve hit its peak much earlier and it’s hard to bounce back from
  • Is it what they really want to do

As far as the pressure factor it’s far too common in where because one person reaches a certain level of success it automatically gets assumed it’ll be continued with their offspring.

It’s just not realistic to think of and even if they’re willing to attempt continuing the family business there might have been a benefit to have a system in place.

It’s highly dependent on the level of success that the previous product had.

In the case of Dragon Ball it’s one of the first shows of its kind so to just pass it off might be an expectation that could never be reached.

I say the show had its highest point already but I digress.

There’s been some brilliant moments in Super so it could just be the case of weathering the storm but we still have Daima and it looks great so time should tell.
