Why do some sports penalize athletes for celebrating? (Explained)

I’ll be explaining why some sports penalize athletes for celebrating.

Why do some sports penalize athletes for celebrating?

It comes down to following the golden rule, treat others how you wanna be treated. One of the sports that’s notorious for penalizing athletes for celebrating in the middle of competition is football, specifically the NFL.

How does the golden rule apply to sports?

The Golden Rule applies to sports by understanding these two principles when competing:

  • Know your role
  • Don’t stray from the league’s expectations

Knowing your role

Understanding your role is simply doing what your supposed to as an athlete.

You’re expected to win the competition being held and doing it within the rules of the sport.

Stop ducking expectations

There’s rules outside of the literal competition itself that you’re expected to follow as an athlete.

Depending on the league you’re representing there’s expectations that the governing body has.

To keep it simple it’s conducting yourself in a way that makes them look good too.

It goes back to a win-win scenario that you’re expected to uphold.

You’re getting to showcase your talents with a team and the league they compete under.

In return you can’t do anything that would make them look bad.

The worse you make them look it harms their reputation and could possibly have them lose future members or sponsors.

How can NFL players get fined for celebrations?

NFL players get fined in numerous ways when they celebrate in a way that’s seen as too excessive.

A few that earns the penalty are:

  • Using the goalpost as a prop
  • Lewd or violent gestures
  • Prolonged celebrations

If you see that being overkill then that’s something you’ll have to take up with the committee but personally it seems fair.

It’s one thing to do things in a mocking or joking way but when it takes away from the product (that being the game) you should see why it’s an issue.

I’m not here to argue for the right to celebrate, especially when players get millions of dollars to play but there’s a level of professionalism you should expect.

That’s all I really have to say about celebrating.

If you want to celebrate more than compete then you might as well be a cheerleader.

Peace.

Final thoughts

These are the points I made in why athletes in sports get penalized for celebrations:

  • Lack of discipline in demonstrating the Golden Rule
  • It’s highly popular in the NFL

I also wanna add that it’s an issue in the wrestling community that seems to happen every year.

If we understand why it’s better to follow the rules when it comes to celebrating it could solve issues.

But what do you think?
