I’m here to talk folkstyle wrestling.
It was one of the first sports that I ever took seriously.
I started in 7th grade after missing out on my school’s basketball team off the suggestion of my P.E. teacher who also was the coach.
I think I caught on pretty quickly having a winning record and qualifying for sectionals both of my years in junior high.
It carried over pretty well when I reached high school and made varsity as a freshman.
I continued the path of the program and slowly noticed improvements in my technique mainly.
Each year it was a winning record with over 20 wins and it did good for my confidence.
It was a great sport for me being able to travel and compete.
I learned values that only would’ve came with the experience of the mat.
It eventually went further to me competing in division 3 college athletics.
It was a little tougher but it’s still something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
I met some great people.
Got national exposure and recognition.
Had the ups and downs that go with competition.
Overall I think it made me a better person.
The desire to compete still creeps over my shoulder though.
Especially after trying freestyle wrestling late in my college career.

I will tell you though that it’s a different beast.
The rules I noticed were different and the intensity just felt increased.
I enjoyed learning so much I even have a guide that I’ve been building.
If there was anything that I can say it helped me develop was an appreciation for the generation below me and wanting them to do well too.
I’m sure you get that appreciation with most sports but the feeling is way more personal when it comes to wrestling.
It’s just something you have to find out to understand.
But then again I may be partially biased.
That’s my 2 cents.
Also!
Here’s a highlight video of my matches in college if you’re interested in seeing.
I share things you may care about with wrestling.
