I’ll be answering why illumi joined the phantom troupe.

Why would someone want to join a group that Kurapika wants to kill was beyond me.

They’ve been known for ruthless methods of getting things.

But at the same time, I guess it’s just the right fit for an assassin.

Illumi joining the phantom

Illumi is the older brother of Killua, likewise a member of the Zoldyck family. He only joined the phantom troupe because Hisoka asked him to. It worked out because Uvogin (another member of the troupe) had to be replaced.

As mentioned above, Illumi is actually the older brother of Killua Zoldyck.
