It helps the offense guess when the ball’s gonna be snapped.
In effect it leads to a more fluid execution of the play.
It’s pretty common to see it done by KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The action of doing this is mainly done in order to communicate between the QB and center.
In totality it signals for motion.
Of course that’s if everything is intended to be done with action, but it’s also a tactic to fake out the defense as well.
The fake out that they’re trying to achieve is an offsides penalty.
