I’ll be explaining why we look different in pictures.
Why do I look different in pictures?
There’s a lens distortion that we experience when the cameras start to have range. We look at a 2D representation of ourselves and it’s not reversed. It can look different from what we see in the mirror. We’re not used to the reversed image.
Perception and the Mirror Image Effect
What we see is different from what’s actually in a mirror.
The mirror image effect is simply seeing the image that’s taken at a flipped perspective.

The Lens Distortion
The lens to the cameras we use daily vary.
There’s different kinds made for specific jobs.
Depending on the one you use can make a difference in how we look.
Lighting and Shadows
Lighting is another angle we can take the issue with looking different in our pictures.
Light itself presents every feature of our most attractive traits and captures it.
If there’s too much shadow without enough light it misses out on quality potential.
It’s a variable though because sometimes they’re added intentionally to draw away from as well.
It depends on what you’re trying to go for.
Your Best Angle
Finding the right angle is an important part of presenting your best self to whoever’s looking.
There’s plenty of technical jargon that I could put you on to but I’ll keep it simple here.
If it’s your left side because it has a simple you’re trying to catch then that’s your angle.
Or maybe your right has a beauty mole you like to show off.
It’s all in preference again.
Expression and Body Language
Here’s where you can bring a little personality to your image.
Showing an animated expression could show your fun side.
Or maybe you want a more serious tone and might cross your arms or something.
You might just look different from the pictures you take just because you’re not showing the same look that’s in still image.
Quality of the Camera and Resolution
If you’re using a cheap camera it’s only gonna have so many pixels it catches.
That’s just another way to say quality but it can make a massive difference in your look.
There’s some brands that’s highly reputable when it comes to taking pictures.
One of the safest brands you can go with is Kodak or even Canon.
This is where you might wanna do more research and figure out what you prefer.
Just stick to brands that’s known for taking pictures.
Timing and Spontaneity
The timing of when you take a picture could make a difference in how you look.
This would be for more of a casual user.
Professionals usually have a formula they put in place before they take any picture.
Casuals may just wanna capture something that’s in the moment and it’ll look exactly that way too.
If you’re a nature based photographer or similar then you might wanna catch a sunrise pic and wake up at dawn for so.
It’s all about what the goal is again.
The Power of Editing
Editing is just another basic aspect that plays a role in how you look.
Someone that adds a bunch of filters to their image will definitely look different when they’re off camera.
