I’ll be explaining why there’s so few top athletes.
Why are there so few top athletes
It takes having a rare combination of factors including:
- special natural ability
- dedicated training from a young age
- access to quality coaching and resources
- mental toughness
- a supportive environment
And sometimes even a bit of luck. Ultimately you need to have an “it” factor that’s universally understood by the best of them.
Special Genetics
It may seem like a cop out to claim special genetics can determine the success of an athlete but it’s true.
Dedication and training
Here’s a more universal aspect that’s agreed upon all athletes that are dominant in their sport.
Access to resources
The resources that an athlete has access to becomes their habitat.
It’s the environment where they train and develop in time for competition.
This is where they spend 70-80% of their time for an event that’s mere moments compared to the time they spent training.
Mental toughness
The “it” factor that’s widely discussed when trying to dissect an elite athlete.
An athlete’s mental toughness is what goes through their head constantly.
It’s the affirmations they say to themselves.
It could be the motivating factor that drives them to continue building on their skill and work ethic.
Competition level
The level of competition that an athlete sees in a calendar year determines their level.
As iron sharpens iron one man sharpens another is a quote from the book of proverbs.
It’s appropriate in placing its significance.
If you’re training and competing against the best it only elevates your level to a quality just as great.

Injury risk
Health is yet another factor that separates the good athletes from the great.
Being able to complete at an optimal level consistently is wildly important because it’s presenting yourself at your best.
Learning to do that comes with training among professionals.
They do what they can to bring out your best while also not harming you.
