I wanna address a thought in self improvement that I feel needs to be shared.
As a black man that feels they had a little later of a start in their career it’s feeling therapeutic to share.
I’ve been having personal development heavy on my mind and one of the most important is self improvement.
At first glance they might seem the same but look at things from a magnifying glass (metaphorically speaking of course).
Personal and self are more closer than the other 2 complimenting words.
It honestly could be put up for interpretation but for the sake of keeping this message somewhat condensed hear me out.
Move to development and improvement.
When I dissect each word they actually aren’t givens – well one is
Just because something develops doesn’t mean that it’s heading in the right direction.
It sounds nice and gets used in a positive way but being someone that works with words often forces me to look deeper.
My favorite example is the old school Polaroid cameras that would develop.
Just because you took a picture doesn’t mean it develops into the shot you really love.
Improvement however already communicates you’re going the right place.
You’re better than what you were from last time.
Self improvement I believe comes much later in life for minorities because there’s a game of catch-up that’s played.
I’m not necessarily knocking it and think it makes sense to an extent.
If I’m majority and I want my group to thrive then I’m gonna set them up in a way where they expand for time to come.
Eventually inclusion gets brought into the picture and depending on several factors it plays a role in how much priority is placed on minorities.
I live in America.
Make of that what you will but the point is there’s universal truths that play a role in where you go in life moving forward.
“We get the same 24 hours”
“No man can serve 2 masters”
“Stay in school”
The list goes on.
Apply it to the person who wants more for themself in life later on and makes self improvement a goal.
That’s where you get me.
