Why is my new lawn yellowing? (4 Possible Reasons Why)

I’ll be tapping into my imagination and answering the hypothetical question of why is my new lawn yellowing.

Why is my new lawn yellowing?

New lawn could be yellowing for a few different reasons:

  • Overwatering
  • Underwatering
  • High phosphorous
  • Lack of nitrogen

Effects of overwatered lawn

There’s dozens of things that could happen from over-watering your lawn.

Master Lawn suggests that Yellowing is only one of many different consequences.

Healthy grass should always be a vibrant green.

That issue can happen with both natural grass and turf.

Even a garden.

Effects of underwatered lawn

Here’s a few of the effects when your lawn is under-watered:

  • lawn fungus problems
  • will kill beneficial microbial activity in soils
  • causes shallow digging grass roots

Ultimately what it could lead to is making the grass struggle and die.

Why high phosphorus levels in grass causes it to yellow

Too much phosphorus is a common case of too much of good thing.

When there’s an excessive amount of phosphorous in combination with a high soil pH it can cause deficiencies of zinc and iron.

To simplify it all it’s a lack of nutrients.

An indicator is when your garden plants are starting to wither.

According to Sustainable Market Farming not only does it cause grass to yellow but it could also stunt plant growth.

What lack of nitrogen does to grass

On top of turning grass yellow the lack of nitrogen can also cause it to have reduced vigor.

The best response to this issue is investing in a high nitrogen fertilizer.

The nitrogen helps promote overall grass shoot growth.

Other than yellowing the other common issue is chlorosis in older leaves to cause this lack of nitrogen.

The nutrients that it’s most likely missing is phosphorus and potassium.
