How do green screens work? (Explained)

I’ll be explaining how green screens work.

How do green screens work?

Green screens work by keying out color.

Usually done while taking pictures or filming a person.

The green screens allow digital softwares to add visual effects with the person being shot.

One of the well known features is called a chroma keying effect that removes the colored background as well.

How do I put a background on a green screen?

Setting a background for green screens works similarly among most digital programs.

You may be looking to host a virtual event and want a theme specific background to support as a visual aid.

Whatever the case may be it’s typically as simple as holding down a few keys on the keyboard depending on if you’re using a PC or Mac.

Holding Ctrl or Command and then clicking the image in the background you wanna change is usually all it takes.

There’s numerous programs to pick from.

A few that’s most popular are:

  • Wondershare
  • Adobe
  • Movavi

Referencing the Adobe and even the Movavi program proves that most of these programs are the same.

Specifically with green screen you’ll be looking for a color picking tool within the software and it’ll prove to be most useful.

Why do green screens have to be green?

You might’ve asked yourself at some point why is green the preferred color for green screens.

Green’s the best because it’s one of the furthest colors from skin tone.

It’s the color that’s used in most visual effects.

Color keying requires it when you look at most professional programs that allow for green screen alterations.

Although green is the most popular and preferred there’s also blue screens.

It’s been used for some of the best blockbusters made ever with Harry Potter and Spider man.

Ultimately this chroma keying effect allows for a digital change that lets editors manipulate the scene better.

It typically takes choosing a background and then painting the walls green.

Taking all of those steps before shooting allows the editors to isolate the color effectively.

What are the disadvantages of green screen?

Although green screen has many uses to make it an effective tool there are some disadvantages as well.

The first is color spilling.

When the color clashes with similar colors that the target’s wearing in the middle of a scene it shows in editing and makes it difficult to manipulate.

It’s not as much of an issue with professional videographers and editors but can be a noticeable problem with amateurs.

There’s also the common problems of green screen being an expensive tool to incorporate.

The right camera that’s also expected to work with a quality sheet of fabric for the green could add up and mean more money for you to spend.

It’s also time-consuming to set everything up correctly and get the desired results with your equipment.

Another potential con to green screen is the overuse of it that could create a false sense of quality and make up for a lousy script or poor acting.

And my last flaw with mediocre use of the tool is having shadows present in the picture.

It could lead to body parts getting cut off and make the final product bad.
