I’ll be sharing 3 reasons for why coffee is called Java.

Why is coffee called Java?

The reason being coffee is called Java has a few different origins. The first is that it’s just a joke that was in house amongst the people who made it in the first place. Another is that there’s an island called Java in Indonesia. And lastly is another theory that suggests it’s called a cup of joe stemming from a joking word called Jamoke.

Why is coffee called mud?

The origin of why coffee’s called mud isn’t entirely clear.

There’s been a saying that mud coffee is an insult called the coffee too thick with grounds.

I’ve also came across the suggestion that it could be a southern thing that dates back to cowboys and how they would label their drink.

And then again it could from the military possibly.

There’s a thought floating around about it being tied to someone in the Navy called Josephus Daniels that didn’t allow alcohol on his ship.

Only coffee.

Final thoughts

Coffee could be called Java for any of the reasons revealed earlier.

It could be:

  • A joke made among creators
  • After the island called Java in Indonesia
  • Originating from the word Jamoke
