Why is failure the greatest teacher? (Explained)

I’ll be explaining why failure is considered the greatest teacher.

It’s one of the success principles that I’m personally working on to get better in my crafts.

If you’ve never experienced failure then you probably don’t learn much from your performances anymore.

It’s something that a lot of people experience but I feel could also learn more about it being an asset.

It could be scary for someone that’s very risk focused when it comes to new opportunities.

But we’re gonna look at why it’s so useful in hindsight.

Why is failure the greatest teacher?

Because of what it represents.

It’s your reminder of a violation that relates to the expectations in life. It commonly happens in the middle and near the end of most careers BUT an effective mentor can help you learn at the beginning.

You’ll be able to start learning from failure as soon as you make the end goal less important. A daily reminder that you don’t learn nearly as much from a win as you do a loss can serve to be extremely helpful.

I’m actually able to use this principle to my advantage because of how persistent I can be.

Failure IS the greatest teacher

I’m probably one to talk with all of the failures I’ve endured in my life.

But believe me when I say failure is the greatest teacher you can have.

Failure in reflection shows the exact moments when improvement could’ve been made.

You usually aren’t aware that something is a failure until numbers finally come out when you’re playing a game.

The best way to view a failure is a learning lesson.

It’s one of the basic rules of improving performance.

That’s why I wanted to get better in games.

I would be quick to get back in whatever was my lab at the time when I learned where I went wrong in competition.

There’s been numerous teams I’ve joined around activities that I wanted to get better in.

One that wasn’t official just yet was a couple gaming groups I participated with friends

Tournaments were my favorite with a few of the combat video games I’d play.

It’s important to reference that because it transfers over successfully to business principles.

Why failure makes you stronger

Failure makes you stronger because the experience can be analyzed and help refine your process.

If we believe that the biggest failure to experience is quitting then it’s simple to understand failure makes you stronger

One of the best applications of this is when you’re reviewing game footage or scoreboards for competition.

When you’re able to explain where the problems happened it makes fixing the issue much more possible.

As long as you have future plans while you’re active in the activity then each performance date holds less weight negatively.

I actually would’ve liked to see more of this mindset out of myself when I was performing in my younger years.

Volunteering to learn from failure

I’ve volunteered in a few projects that I feel helped me personally to learn from failure better.

It taught me that we always have a chance to learn from prior performance.

You can start volunteering right away!

There’s community organizations that’s looking to put on events that would gladly accept the help from someone willing to.

Linked In has a useful list on how to exactly learn failure from volunteering.

Embracing failure in general is important for success in any part of your life but volunteering comes with less pressure.

Final thoughts

I immediately wanted to speak on failure because it’s something that doesn’t feel good and is something that needs to be understood.

There’s expectations you’ll have when it comes to seeing success in an activity whether it’s domination or winning in general.

At the beginning of learning anything its easily thought of as an opportunity to get better because it’s understood you’re new.

You eventually reach a point where you’ve practiced enough and it’s time to get better results.

Failure teaches us:

  • lessons that last forever
  • A lesson in humility
  • More about ourselves
  • Our ability to be resilient

It makes change possible.
