Who would’ve thought I’d be writing about Charlamagne?

What books do you want to read?

Shook ones: Anxiety’s playing tricks on me by Charlamagne Tha God. I bought his first release Black Privilege when it first came out. And to be honest I’m really not trying to read more books over the ones I already have. If anything I’d like to go over everything I’ve written more often just to reevaluate what I’ve communicated.

My Review on Charlamagne’s Black Privilege Book

It was a great book. It’s one of the most serious books that I purchased on my own without anyone telling me to. To add a little more honesty it’s probably one of the first books that helped inspire me to want to succeed more independently as a black man in America. I was influenced to make the purchase through recognition. Following the daytime radio shows (specifically The Breakfast Club) and being introduced to the author, DJ Envy and Angela Yee at the time. I felt included with their discussions and compelled to wanting inclusion with black owned businesses. Learning how to maneuver in a society, and possibly improve what I was taught growing up to raise the bar my family started me out with. Because I witnessed their growth I wanted to be part of it and saw this book as an opportunity to do so.

An Argument For ‘Less Reading’ In My Life

Now discovering I’m saying I’d like to do less reading in my life might sound crazy to some but it makes sense to me. As someone who blogs and makes articles (on top of rapping) there’s a lot of creation that goes into those activities. I see it as I’m either consuming content or creating it. I’ve already went through the traditional schooling system where reading books were mandatory so as far as the country’s concerned I’m educated enough to do everything I want to in life. I can say that even more confidently since I furthered my education to college. But pay attention! I’m not saying I’m completely done with reading but I do want to focus less on it. I had a mentor that introduced the concept of what’s called “analysis paralysis” to me. What it means is trying to study so much to the point where you never actually get anything accomplished. In today’s world if you’re stuck in a spot you’re done growing. I believe that’s true even for an activity that’s supposed to help you grow. If anything I could see reading be more of a mental vitamin you take. Think about it, you don’t just sit around eating vitamins all day, it’s just a small part of a consistent regiment you do daily to maintain your health. For me, reading’s the same. So as a creator I shouldn’t ‘fangirl’ over everybody who has something to say. My job is to identify who I believe is worth listening to and do what I can to emulate their inspirational messages. That could be done through recommending their products, doing my part by passing their message along or just directly saying thank you for the time they took to share (Charlamagne, if you happen to read this consider an official thanks for making this book). But it’s a good book to keep things simple as far as applying practical principles in your life through the successes and failures that someone prominent in media experienced. I highly recommend it.
