I’ll be answering why salt makes ice colder. I’ve heard this before as a kid but I never really looked much into why that is. I remember times where I would go out to eat with friends and they did something where they would put salt on someone’s hand. After sprinkling so much salt on there it would get followed up with ice and remove skin in a painless yet ugly way. That might be a bit of a tangent but felt relative. Anyway, let’s get into the question.

Why does salt make ice colder

Salt makes ice colder because it prevents melted water from freezing. It’s actually the same process with how ice cream is made. It induces a colligative effect that most of the time is boiling point elevation.

The best example to reference if you’re trying to understand it best is through a method called Le Chatelier’s principle.
