Why did jigsaw become a killer

After surviving a suicide attempt he found a new appreciation for life and decided to put other people (he selected) through tests to determine how bad they want to live. The name he earned for himself came after he cut a piece of skin in the shape of a jigsaw piece from people who failed his tests.
