Why is being sober so boring? (Explained)

I’ll be explaining why being sober is so boring.

I came to the question while watching the movie Godzilla vs. Kong and one of the quotable moments from the movie was:

“You mean I gotta die with you sober?”

Why is being sober so boring

This is a belief shared by many people that is or at least was used to doing drugs at some point in time because they strongly believe that if you’re not using drugs or alcohol, then somehow life is either boring or uninteresting.

Why I think life can be fun sober

Life could be fun sober because there’s so many forms of entertainment available that sometimes sobriety is all you could afford to practice at times.

One of my best memories of living what I consider a fun life in sobriety is during my time with sports in junior high.

That was my point in time where I was doing what I thought to be traveling and showcasing my skills.

Of course it’s illegal to do drugs at any time in sports, especially in grade school but you’re brought to a point where you’re defining what fun is.

I had video games and other extra curricular activities but it was sports that did it for me.

It allowed me to push my personal limits and help teammates do the same.

I got to meet some of the best mentors and coaches I may ever have.

It’s tough to say everybody was doing the right thing all the time but when we got together it was all business, in a fun way.

Reflecting back on that it reminds me that there was a possibility to have fun in sobriety.

What can I expect from life after beating addiction?

Help.

One of the things you’ll hear most often is that you’ll always be a recovering addict regardless of how long you went without using drugs.

The period you can call your life moving is the rebuilding stage.

Title it that because that’s what you’ll be doing, first to get life back to the glory you experienced before drugs and possibly something greater after walking away from whatever you used.

How to focus on the present moment

One of the best things you can do is learn to be focused in the present moment.

A Calm Blog suggests a few techniques you could follow to practice this better.

A few of my favorite are:

  • Exploring breathing exercises
  • Reduce screen time
  • Taking up journaling
  • Practice meditation
  • Spend time in nature

That’s only a few of 9 but it’s important to remember that the goal is to be in the ‘here and now’ with life.

Final thoughts

So being sober could be looked at as boring because it might be different from your norm.

For many doing drugs and alcohol is a highlight of their life but the important thing is to remember that there is fun that could be had in sobriety.

I’m not telling you to stop doing anything that’s working for you.

A point that I could’ve mentioned earlier is that you should only do this if you’re looking to make this change for yourself.

That’s also coming from a young adult without most responsibility that would require that sacrifice.

I have however been involved with activities that required me to be complicit with being sober so I have things I could contribute to this conversation.
