Why Did Whis Smile at Gogeta?

Wanted Gogeta to finish off Broly.

Somebody’s gonna be a God.

Naturally happy character.

Rival to Beerus.

What Made Gogeta Spare Broly?

Witnessing Shenron transport him off Earth thanks to a wish made by Cheelai removed him as a threat and ultimately saved him.

The Next God of Destruction

We don’t have an official successor for Beerus yet but it’s definitely on Whis’s agenda to find one.

Whis smiled at Gogeta because when he told Goku and Vegeta during training that they could achieve much more if they fused.

This excludes the non canon fusion in DBZ and GT where Gogeta was needed for the likes of Janemba and Omega Shenron.

Final thoughts

There’s a chance that Whis smiled because he has a hidden agenda of making Gogeta the new God of Destruction.

And with Gogeta he realizes he might be the warrior strong enough to carry on that title eventually.

Whis has every right to think this about Gogeta because the progression becomes clear.

Goku being one of his protégés had signs of a promising future with eventually mastering Ultra Instinct.

If we go back to the point of the Super Broly movie when Goku gets his one on one with Broly, he goes through a power up.

It’s the one after going Super Saiyan God.

Whis knowing that MUI takes a lot of training to acquire shows that Goku as an individual is on his way.

So when you combine Goku’s potential with Vegeta’s progression as well, you can only imagine how strong Gogeta appears to be.

This would add new excitement to his life finally finding a fighter that could rival the strength of Lord Beerus and even himself.

Then again we could be completely wrong about that theory with finding a fighter that rivals Beerus.

Beerus has a full power that’s still a mystery to everybody following the show.

There’s a chance that even an Ultra Instict friendly fighter isn’t close to his league, but Gogeta could at least give him a better fight if MUI is our known ceiling at this point.

Remember, Whis still serves Beerus and wants to find someone that can challenge him.

Maybe this was the Super Saiyan God that he dreamt of at some point.

There’s been many theories for the smile Whis shows and there was one worth mentioning:

What this member of a forum had to share was kind of a sketchy theory but more of a testament to the power of Gogeta again.

If you continue the fight you’ll see a point where when Gogeta and Broly clash they appear to break reality.

They believe that the universe was destroyed and Whis had to use his angel authority to reverse this.

I personally don’t believe that’s the case because I think they would’ve expanded on an intervention that big.

It does however just show that those 2 fighters together have enough power to do what Gods could only do.

Again, this could peak Whis’ curiosity with having a challenge and possibly a new rep for God level strength.

Altogether he was happy for his new fighter.
