Why are horror movies comforting? (Explained)

I’ll be explaining why horror movies are comforting.

Why are horror movies comforting?

Horror movies are comforting because of a process called “rest and digest” which brings dopamine responses that flood the brain with an addictive hormone to calm us down.

This feeling also causes our brains to tell us we feel accomplished after surviving a scary situation. The kicker is that we were never in any real danger. It tricks us into getting a benefit from a situation we never really experienced.

The Dopamine response

I’ll be explaining what dopamine does for the brain while watching scary movies.

Dopamine assists in flooding the brain with feelings of comfort.

There’s more ways of hacking this dopamine receptor than just watching scary movies.

But if you are a horror fanatic you’ll receive that feeling as a reward for conquering a dangerous situation.

It’s almost like getting positive reinforcement for doing something right.

Your brain tells itself good job for figuring out something that wasn’t guaranteed to get solved.

Final Thoughts

Horror movies are comforting because they put your body through a reward system cycle thats possible thanks to the assistance of dopamine.

What do you think though?
