I wanna ask you what type of movies and tv shows do you watch?
It’ll probably be better for me to share a few of mine first because I consider myself to be an initiator with most situations.
Let’s get into mine first.
What Type Of Movies And TV Shows Do You Watch
Because both forms of video share the same category for the genre, I’ll list them out as such.
- Horror
- Anime
- Reality
- Drama
- Documentary / Docuseries
- Action
- Comedy
These keep me fairly entertained and engaged enough to focus on a subject when sitting still.
Horror
I promise I’m not crazy because I enjoy watching horror movies, there’s just something appealing about it.
There’s actually a post that I made which explains what makes this particular genre attractive to many different people.
Why Do Horror Movies Comfort Me?
This pocket of movies have been around since the mid 1890s as a form of entertainment.
Horror movies can be found by a variety of providers; Shudder, Syfy, and traditional streaming sites as well (Hulu, Netflix, HBO).
Unfortunately it’s an under-appreciated genre because it’s either on one end of the spectrum or the other as good or bad.
If you ask me it’s because of how hot and cold we (as people looking to be entertained) are when deeming something good.
Anime
I’m very vocal about my interest in the anime genre and for those wondering it’s an animated version of story telling.
Anime’s so entertaining for me because it’s different from traditional cartoons that at most only focuses on basic storytelling.
The genre as a whole’s been around for only decades so it’s fairly new (compared to the rest of the genres on this post).
It originates from Asian culture but has quickly gained traction in terms of popularity all across the globe.
Most anime is pretty recognizable from a range of indicators, some being the drawing style, location and names of characters.
I’d recommend you give anime a shot if you consider yourself open minded and able to get into a story even though it’s animated.
Reality
I’ll be honest, I’m only an occasional indulgent of reality shows.
A few shows to list that I can remember being a fan of this genre were:
- Hell’s Kitchen
- American Idol
- Fear Factor
- Nanny 911
- Jersey Shore
Obviously a lot of these shows were more popular in the mid 2000s but still entertaining nonetheless.
A cool thing about these older shows are that they’re available on a lot of free platforms, a personal favorite of mine is Tubi.
I actually got started watching these type of shows with elder people, wanting to have something in common with them.
Reality tv in general was an interesting concept to me because it had a layer of transparency that I could appreciate.
Drama
I’m personally not that big of a fan of many dramas but when I find one that I like, I tend to be a big fan of it.
The one drama movie that I could probably watch over again is Foxcatcher.
Granted, I might be biased because I’ve been wrestling for at least 5 years by the time it was released.
Wrestling itself isn’t the point of this reference, as much as how impactful it was in capturing a huge scandal completely.
When I watch dramas I look for the story that’s told in them and see if there’s anything worth remembering from it.
It’s important because it allows civilians as a whole to help identify and relate to others on a more serious tone.
Documentary / Docuseries
I’ve actually became more of a fan of documentaries and Docuseries alike shortly after my time in college.
Personally I’m sure that the style of stories told through these have been the same for a while but it’s the stories for me.
When we had to watch these things in grade school it felt less interesting to me because it felt more like a chore.
If you’re trying to get more into this genre then I’d actually recommend you try animal documentaries first.
I say that because it’s an easy starting point in having the story of whatever animal and you get cool facts about them you can take.
They’re a very good way to learn something with cited sources outside of having to read an actual book (although that’s cool too).
Action
I’m a relatively average fan of action movies, but mainly for a lot of superhero movies.
There’s a variety of films and shows that are packed with action out there, but I’m traditionally drawn to the characters.
For me it probably started more when DC was releasing the Batman and original Superman movies.
If you’re looking for direction for where to start without getting too fantasy-driven is maybe James Bond or Mission Impossible.
I would probably stack up this genre in the top 5 as of now (but would definitely rank it higher on the list as a kid).
Regardless, it’s fun to watch when you see someone overcome danger driven adversity and doing incredible things to overcome it.
Comedy
I surprisingly like comedy more than what I would wanna give credit for.
There’s plenty of classics that’s out there to enjoy for casual fans and even die-hards of the actual art of comedy.
